Flemington has a lot to offer; from activities that enrich children's lives with educational opportunities and cultural endeavors that Moms, Dads, kids and even Grandmas and Grandpas will enjoy. The Flemington Raritan Business Association places a strong emphasis on community, by promoting its hidden treasures from the uplifting Kwanzaa Celebration to the historic family activities at the Fleming House. The FRBA also sponsors other major gems like Salsa Night and the Holiday Parades.
Northlandz bills itself as the world's largest railroad exhibit. It's a spectacular family adventure: especially perfect for a rainy day getaway. The owner himself is an adept concert organist and his music echos along the viewing passageways. Strolling along the exhibits' eight miles of indoor track is like walking through the past. All is in motion from the miniature villages with its bustling towns, bridges, farms, cities and factories. The playful Club Car Cafe crew sells Nathan's famous hot dogs and other snacks to keep the little ones happy.
If physical activity and sports appeal to your children, there are three popular destinations in and around Flemington you might consider: Shields Skate Park, Diamond Nation and Pine Creek Miniature Golf. Shields Skate Park is where your young skateboarder, inline skater or BMX biker can have the ultimate experience. Apparatus includes wedges, quarter pipes, spines, grind rails and half pipes. The Indoor Academy at Diamond Nation features a variety of exciting opportunities, including indoor baseball hitting and slam-dunk basketball. Finally, there's Pine Creek Miniature Golf, located 15 minutes from downtown Flemington, with its two challenging 18-hole courses boasting trees, flowers, streams, ponds, waterfalls and gazebos. If you are accustomed to miniature golf, this is going to be quite a surprise; there isn't a single pseudo-windmill, lighthouse or elephant in sight. If you want to try it, go soon: the course ceases operations on October 31, 2011.
The Fleming Castle, built in 1756, changed its name to the Samuel Fleming House in 2009. Today, the building operates as a museum offering guided tours that highlight daily life in the 1800s and 1900s. Special monthly family programs like Colonial Needlework, Calligraphy, Teddy Bear Picnic or Valentines, Valentines, and more Valentines are offered on the second Saturday of each month. If your family loves history and you have a little time, a visit to this delightful museum should be on your itinerary.
Flemington has a Community Diversity Council, a non-profit, all volunteer organization created to promote ethnic and racial diversity. They host family friendly events within the community such as the annual Diversity Picnic, which features tales from around the world, international cuisine, live music and crafts. Two other events are the Kwanzaa Celebration and the Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK Jr.) Day of Service. At the Kwanzaa festivities, traditions are taught from crafts to African fashions. The Day of Service honors MLK Jr's legacy by having children and families engage in activities from coloring bags for Meals on Wheels to visiting local nursing homes.
