The town's industry once consisted of a tannery and lumber mills; today, the main attractions of this small town in Potter County include hunting and fishing in the nearby forests and on Pine Creek. The Rough Cut Lodge sits right on the Pine Creek River, where visitors can fish, boat and swim, and the local woods and state game lands offer hunting in-season. A 10-minute drive from Gaines leads to PA Canyon, a long gorge that cuts through Potter County at depths of up to 1,500 feet. Here, visitors can hike, bicycle or ride motorcycles through the winding roads and trails surrounding the gorge. The nearest dining options require driving into downtown Galeton.
