Comstock Township is a community of about 14,000 residents located in Kalamazoo County in southwestern Michigan. Morrow and Campbell lakes are within the township which is eight miles east of Kalamazoo. Kalamazoo is home to the University of Western Michigan, as well as several concert venues and organizations devoted to the arts.
The Bach Festival of Kalamazoo is an annual, week-long series of events to commemorate the life and works of the great composer. Running from late April to early May, the festivities include a young vocalist concert, an organ crawl (where the music of Bach is performed in several churches throughout Kalamazoo), a lunch concert and a community choral in which anyone can participate. The events are sponsored by various community and state organizations and can be attended free of charge.
This festival in Kimble Pines Park, 13 miles east of Comstock, occurs on the weekends in July and August. The event features a different theme each week, including Pirate Invasion, Flashing Steel, Magical Muses and Buccaneer Bash. Vendors sell crafts, turkey legs, fairy wings and model weapons. Entertainers joust, juggle and play music. The festival is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., rain or shine.
The annual Blues Fest takes place in downtown Kalamazoo. The festival typically runs on a Thursday through Saturday in July, and features two stages and 24 acts. There also are educational workshops on topics such as song writing, blues guitar and blues harmonica. Tickets cost $5 on Thursday, $12 on Friday and $14 on Saturday, and children 12 and under get in free.
This festival features demonstrations by planes from the U.S. Air Force, Army and Navy. There is a ballooning competition and the opportunity to take rides on the B-25 bomber. The festival features food, shopping and collectibles, and RV camping is available near the field of flight. The 2011 event will take place from July 1-4.
