Algonac is located along the St. Clair River, just across from Canada. This city is a popular destination for fishing enthusiasts, as the river hosts many species of fish, including walleye. Visitors can walk along one of the longest freshwater boardwalks in the country, watch the boat parades that are held throughout the year, and still be within an hour's drive of beaches.
The beach at Walter and Mary Burke Park in New Baltimore is about 14 miles from Algonac. This sandy beach is along Anchor Bay is located adjacent to a city park, which provides access to playgrounds and barbecue pits. This park, which is usually open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m., is overseen by city lifeguards and has picnic facilities, a fishing pier, a boardwalk and volleyball and tether ball courts.
The Fort Gratiot County Park is about an hour's drive north of Algonac. This sandy beach has 852 feet of shoreline along Lake Huron. Visitors to this beach have access to the adjacent park's playgrounds, restrooms and picnic areas, as well as its 0.85 miles of paved trails. This beach, which is not overseen by any lifeguards, is usually open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
The beach In Marine city is about seven and a half miles north of Algonac. This public beach has a barrier-free sidewalk, picnic areas with barbecue grills, spring toys and bathrooms. This sandy beach on the St. Clair River opens on the last local school day and closes on the first day of school; during its open season, visitors and residents may swim from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. This beach is surrounded by free street parking, and is two blocks from a free parking lot.
About a hour's drive from Algonac is the public beach at Belle Isle. This beach is within a 982-acre island park that provides recreation opportunities like fishing and golfing, and there are educational opportunities like visiting the maritime museum or nature zoo. Next to the half-mile-long sandy beach, which is the only public beach along the Detroit River, is a water slide that is open to the public. During the summer, this beach hosts hydroplane races.
