Clearwater, Florida, is near several famous beaches that are known for white sand dunes and clear water. Waves on the Gulf of Mexico are usually smaller than on the Atlantic side of Florida and not as suitable for surfing, but there are plenty of other water sports available.
Clearwater Beach is famous for its white sand dunes and sparkling water, but don't be tempted to leave with the sun. Every night, beginning at sunset -- weather permitting -- artists and crafters gather for the Sunsets at Pier 60 Festival. Street performers and musicians perform, while artists and crafters show their wares in booths along the pier. The performers vary from night to night, but the show is always upbeat and family-friendly. There is no charge, but feel free to tip your favorite acts.
Sand Key Park is located less than two miles from Clearwater, just across Clearwater Pass from Clearwater Beach. The 95-acre Sand Key Park is a barrier island offering pristine white sand beaches bordered with sea oats and palm trees. While development can be seen across the pass, the beaches are mostly wild with only the usual park amenities. Birds and wildlife also can be viewed at the park.
The beaches of Sand Key Park are a nesting ground for sea turtles. After a day of surf and sun, sit quietly on a viewing bench and watch the island birds and wildlife that live and feed on the island. A designated dog park is available, but dogs are not allowed on the beach.
If you desire solitude and miles of unspoiled beaches, the next stop is Honeymoon Island, approximately 10 miles north of Clearwater. This Florida State Park provides approximately four miles of pristine white beaches along with nature trails, swimming, canoeing, fishing and picnic facilities. A designated pet beach is provided. This park is a favorite among locals and is the departure point for ferries to Caladesi Island.
Accessible only by boat or ferry service from Honeymoon Island, Caladesi Island State Park is one of the few unspoiled island left along Florida's Gulf Coast. Rated America's Best Beach in 2008 by Dr. Beach, the clear water and white sand beaches appeal to swimmers, sunbathers and fishermen, while wildlife enthusiasts enjoy the hiking and wildlife trail. Because of its seclusion, this beach is never crowded.
Located approximately 35 miles south of Clearwater is Fort De Soto Park, one of Dr. Beach's choices for Best American Beaches 2005. The Pinellas County Park sports two beaches, each very different. The East Beach is popular with beachgoers for its clear water and soft white sand. North Beach is sheltered from the waves by a sand bar forming a large lagoon. The water is shallow and calm. This beach is popular among families with small children and fishermen. At low tide you can wade across the lagoon.
The Fort De Soto Historical Fort for which the park is named remains on the island and will reopen to the public in March 2011. This park is another favorite among locals for day trips and family picnics. A campground is also available, but make reservations early; the campground is usually booked up. While there is currently no entrance fee into the park, you will have to take toll roads to get there.
