Mount Pocono is located in the Pocono Mountains, in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. The town is situated at the junction of PA 940 and PA 611. The Poconos are probably best known for skiing, but Mount Pocono is a year-round holiday destination for families and couples. It has become a popular weekend holiday resort for people from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York City.
The closest airport to Mount Pocono is Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, with direct services from a number of major U.S. cities, including Chicago, Oklahoma, Philadelphia and New York City. Several bus companies operate regular schedules from New Jersey and New York City to Mount Pocono bus station. By car, the town is approximately 90 minutes’ drive from New York City and two hours from Philadelphia.
Mount Pocono offers a very wide range of outdoor activities, including horse riding, hiking, off-road driving, hunting and mountain biking, plus boating, fishing and water sports available at Lake Wallenpaupack. For golfers, there are several courses in the area, including the nine-hole Mount Pocono Golf Course. Camelback Waterpark, approximately five miles from the town, has a host of water slides, a wave pool, Olympic swimming pool and raft rides, and also offers the opportunity to pan for gemstones. Shopping addicts are catered to with the Crossings Premium Outlets in Tannersville, where 100 designer outlet stores are open daily, and several local hotels offer "Shop and Stay" packages. Cultural attractions include the Pocono Indian Museum, the Everhart Museum, which features collections of art and natural history, and the Houdini Museum, which is believed to be the world's only museum dedicated to the famous escapologist.
There are several major ski resorts in the Poconos, but Camelback Mountain Resort is the closest to Mount Pocono. The park has 160 acres of terrain, with 34 ski trails and 15 lifts. The area is 100% covered by snow-making machines if the weather isn't cooperative, and the slopes and trails are regularly groomed. Terrain parks and pipes are provided for snowboarders, and nonskiers can enjoy snow tubing. Other winter activities in Mount Pocono include dog-sledding, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
For those who prefer a little independence, Mount Pocono has holiday homes to rent, and Mount Pocono Camping Ground caters to RVs, with almost 200 sites with full hook-up facilities. The pet-friendly campground has heated swimming pools and an activities program for guests. The town’s hotels range from economy motels to luxury resort hotels. The Mount Pocono Motel has double rooms, some with Jacuzzi, as well as family and balcony suites. The Mount Airy Casino Resort has an AAA four-diamond rating, with luxurious guestrooms and suites. As well as the casino, the resort has a matinee theater, nightclub, health and fitness suite and five restaurants. The Inn at Pocono Manor has 250 guestrooms, decorated in period style, and is ideally suited to sporty guests, with a host of facilities including tennis and basketball courts, fishing, golf courses and heated pools.
