Boasting a wealth of cultural attractions and surrounded by the sparkling waters of the Caribbean, the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John are a popular tourist destination. Easy access adds to their lure, since U.S. citizens do not need a passport to travel to the islands from the mainland or Puerto Rico. While several direct air routes are available, travelers may wish to visit the islands as a side trip from nearby Puerto Rico. An array of island-hopping options can make the journey half the fun.
Take a Scheduled Flight from a Major Air Carrier
Book a flight from Puerto Rico's San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) to one of the two major international airports serving the Virgin Islands. These are Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St. Croix (STX) and Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas (STT). Commercial air carriers servicing these routes are American Airlines, United, Delta and Continental. Flight times are approximately 20 minutes to St. Croix and 30 minutes to St. Thomas. There is no major airport on the island of St. John.
Fly by Seaplane or Air Shuttle
Several air carriers also offer flight service between SJU and St. Croix and St. Thomas on smaller seaplanes and air shuttles. These carriers include Seaborne Airlines, Air Sunshine, American Eagle and Cape Air. These carriers offer several daily scheduled flights between the Virgin Islands and San Juan, although frequency may be determined by travel demand.
Book a Private Charter Flight
For the ultimate in island-hopping luxury, book a private charter flight from San Juan to the airports or seaplane bases on St. Croix and St. Thomas. Private charters operate on your schedule and their steeper prices often include VIP services such as catering, pet transport, island tours, private jet connections and relief from the hassle of waiting in lines with other travelers. Caribbean charter companies include Air Sunshine, Sea Flight, Island Birds, Stratos Jet Charter and Air America.
Sail on a Private Yacht
If your budget allows, indulge in a nautical experience with a private yacht charter. The waters surrounding the U.S. Virgin Islands are ideal for scenic sailing, and charters can accommodate a wide range of Caribbean itineraries. Virgin Island Yacht Charters, Caribbean Soul Charters and Fair Wind Sailing all serve the area. Charters can include a crew to handle all operation or be "bareboat" bookings for experienced sailors ready to brave navigation themselves.
