Fletcher is a young town, relatively speaking, having been first incorporated in 1989. The town resides in the mountainous region of western North Carolina and is located inside Henderson County. The city is considered to be part of the Asheville, N.C., metropolitan statistical area.
The town of Fletcher was first incorporated in 1989 as part of a movement by local politician Sara Waechter, who would also serve as interim mayor until an election in 1990. The town is situated near Cane Creek and French Broad River.
Fletcher is a growing community of 4,185, as measured during the 2000 census. Growth continues, and it is expected the 2010 census will show there are about 6,500 residents. Of those residents, 93.6 percent are Caucasian. About 3.3 percent of the population is black, and 1.3 percent are of Asian descent. The median income of a Fletcher resident is more than $45,000, and 74 percent of Fletcher residents 16 or older are employed. The average value of a home occupied by its owner is $133,700.
The average temperature of Fletcher ranges from a mean of 35 degrees in January, the coldest month, to a mean of 73 degrees in July, the warmest month. Fletcher is home to Fletcher Community Park, built in 1999, and Kate's Park, built in 1995. The city is also located near the historic Johnson Farm site and access points to the French Broad River, which provides whitewater rafting opportunities. Other nearby opportunities include hiking in the Pisgah National Forest and North Mills River Recreation Area.
