The Battle of Fort Macon occurred from March 23 to 26 in 1862 during the Civil War. Records show that one union soldier was killed and 11 were wounded during the battle, while seven confederate soldiers were killed and 18 wounded.
Fort Macon is a historical landmark operated by the North Carolina Division of Parks and offers public access to the Crystal Coast. The park is surrounded by water on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean, Beaufort Inlet and Bogue Sound.
Fort Macon was built out of brick and stone, designed with five sides and houses 26 vaulted rooms. The outer walls are 4.5-feet thick to protect those inside from intruders and pirates.
