The North Carolina Zoo lies on 1,500 acres of land in the Uwharrie Mountains of Asheboro, North Carolina. Guests can expect a day of up-close animal interactions with special events and activities going on during the year such as the Zoo Fest.
Over 1,100 animals call the zoo home. Western lowland gorillas, Panamaian golden frogs, chimpanzees, red wolves, shortnose sturgeon and Cape Fear shiners are endangered species represented as the zoo works to educate about conservation across the world. The zoo is the largest in the United States to feature natural habitats, which allow the animals to stay in areas that replicate their home environments. No cages of any kind are used to enclose the animals.
Admission is required to access the zoo. The price for an adult admission ticket is $10, as of October, 2010. Discounts for seniors over 62 and children ages 2 through 12 are offered. Children under 2-years-old get in free.
Tram service is provided around the zoo. A shuttle operates between the North America and Africa parking lots. There is no charge for either service.
