Although somewhat limited when compared to larger cities, the Indian restaurant scene near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina still offers several authentic options for Indian food when you want to take a break from beach-side funnel cake and barbecues. Bombay at the Beach continues to offer authentic Indian cuisine in the area and has recently been joined by a new restaurant, Kabab and Curry. If you want to travel a little farther, Taj Indian in nearby Florence continues to offer its extensive buffet.
The most established Indian option in Myrtle Beach, Bombay at the Beach has been operating for years now and continues to offer reasonably priced Indian dishes and a very diverse lunch buffet. The restaurant offers a number of vegetarian options, but also has several meat dishes and traditional Indian drinks like mango lassi. Many patrons leave Bombay at the Beach raving about the small restaurant's authentic curry and the owner's friendly service.
A recent arrival in Myrtle Beach, Kabab and Curry opened in June 2010. Its two owners, professionals with more than 20 years of restaurant experience in Brooklyn, chose to follow the established formula for Indian restaurants in South Carolina-- an extensive menu and a lunch buffet. Prices are comparable to Bombay at the Beach, with most entrees costing between eight and fifteen dollars and the lunch buffet coming in at nine. The restaurant sets itself apart, however, by offering halal (compliant with Muslim dietary restrictions) food and a more regional menu including Pakistani and Bangladeshi options. Kabab and Curry is perfect for patrons who consider themselves experts in South-Asian cuisine and wish to sample subtle regional differences. Of course, as the restaurant's name suggests, the menu also offers an extensive selection of kababs and different curries.
Located in nearby Florence, a little over an hour's drive from Myrtle Beach, Taj Indian cuisine aims to make Indian food accessible for patrons in South Carolina in a comfortable family-friendly establishment. The menu is very complete, offering many of the traditional Indian favorites and providing clear explanations of the ingredients in each dish. The restaurant also offers a children's menu with American food options for young patrons that have not yet developed a taste for Indian food.
Taj Indian, nevertheless, does not shy away from authentic touches and spices. The garam masala is a favorite among restaurant reviewers and the particularly extensive lunch buffet is a good opportunity to sample multiple dishes if you are not familiar with Indian cuisine.
