The city of Lorain is on Lake Erie at the mouth of the Black River in Lorain County, Ohio in the Cleveland-Elyria metro area. Visitors to Lorain will find that this city, named after a French province, is home to a wide range of recreational activities throughout the year. Even during winter, you can wear your warm winter clothes and enjoy indoor and outdoor activities in this port city.
Just about everyone can enjoy sledding in 68-acre Oakwood Park during winter. Less than 20 minutes away you can also go sledding in Vermilion River Reservation and a bit further in Cascade Park in Elyria. Ice skating is also allowed in 20 acre Lakeview Park in Lorain during winter and you can also travel about 20 minutes to Elyria for ice skating in the North Park Complex Ice Arena.
All Lorain County Metro Parks offer cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing during winter. Additionally, when the snow exceeds three inches, skiing is allowed in Schoepfle Gardens and Forest Hills Golf Course, both less than 30 minutes from Lorain. If you want to take a 40-minute drive, you can also enjoy cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing in 900 acre Findley State Park.
During winter, the entire family can attend an annual event such as visiting Santa and his elves at their workshop. This event is held during the holiday season at the Harbor House in 2.5-acre Century Park, a small park on the lake.
If you prefer to stay indoors during winter, you can bowl in Rebman Recreation. Rebman has 48 bowling lanes with automatic scoring as well as a pro-shop, embroidery and trophy shop, snack bar, lounge and two rooms for private parties. Kids can also bowl in the bumper lanes. Rebman Recreation is open daily.
