Things to Do Inside in NYC

New York City provides residents and visitors with a number of things to do. Whether day or night, the streets are often filled with local pedestrians and tourists searching for ways to entertain themselves. Inclement weather, however, can affect your opportunity to spend a day outside in the city. When bad weather sends you indoors, consider enjoying one of the many indoor activities that New York has to offer.

  1. Museum of Modern Art

    • The Museum of Modern Art, or MoMA, offers visitors a look at one of the world's largest collections of modern and contemporary art. Works on display at the museum includes paintings, design, drawings, photography and sculptures. Besides the more than 150,000 pieces of art, MoMA also offers an archive of more than 300,000 books and 22,000 films, according to the MoMA website. While spending the day inside MoMA, visitors may want to check out familiar works such as "Starry Night" by Vincent van Gogh, "The Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dalí or "The Dance" by Henri Matisse.

    Zoos

    • Spend your day visiting the animals at either the Central Park Zoo or Bronx Zoo. Both zoos are indoors and feature a wide variety of animals and attractions. When visiting the Bronx Zoo, visitors may want to check out the Congo Gorilla Forest exhibit and Jungle World, which bring you up close with gorillas and African wildlife and allow "travel" through a tropical rain forest. The Bronx Zoo also offers an interactive children's zoo where kids can run and play and feed farm animals. The Central Park Zoo offers its own set of attractions such as the endangered Tamarin monkeys, sea lion and penguin feedings, snow leopards and Rain Forest Pavilion.

    Madame Tussauds New York

    • Come face-to-face with nearly 200 of the most famous celebrities and cultural figures at Madame Tussauds New York. Although the celebrities on display at this museum are only made of wax, visitors may enjoy taking pictures with the life-like pieces of art. The five-story museum features six themes, including: "Popular Culture," which showcases celebrities such as The Beatles, Marilyn Monroe, Johnny Depp, Sean "Diddy" Combs and Miley Cyrus; and "The Gallery," which showcases world leaders and cultural figures such as President Barack Obama, John F. Kennedy, Princess Diana and Dr. Maya Angelou. Wax figures of Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez, Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Mets and the Yankees are also among those on display.

    Madd Fun

    • Madd Fun is an indoor family entertainment center that offers a variety of attractions for adults and children six and older. The main attractions include bumper cars, laser tag, bowling, rock wall (for climbing), teen arcade, flight simulator, pool tables, race car speedway and a roller coaster.
