Things to Do in Winter in NYC

Though New York City can get quite cold in the winter, there are plenty of available activities. You may not want to relax in the meadows of Central Park or walk the boardwalk, but plan to stay busy because the Big Apple is always in constant motion. No wonder they call it the city that never sleeps. So bundle up and feel the warmth of the most populous city in the United States.

  1. Restaurant Week

    • Every year in late January, many of New York's most expensive and exclusive restaurants lower their prices for the annual Winter Restaurant Week. Most of these restaurants offer a multiple course meal at a fixed price. The price does not include taxes, beverage or gratuity, but it also gives you an opportunity to try the restaurant for the fraction of the cost. Of course, the menu options are more limited than normal. It is important to reserve a table well in advance.

    Rockefeller Center

    • Perhaps the most iconic winter location in New York City is Midtown's Rockefeller Center. Famous for its giant Christmas tree, the 19-building complex takes up 22 acres. Rockefeller Center is also home to Radio City Music Hall, where the Christmas Spectacular with the Radio City Rockettes is held. The show features dancing and music. Also famous is the Ice Rink, where for $7.50 you can rent skates. Lessons are also provided.

    Westminster Dog Show

    • The Westminster Dog Show is held every February at Madison Square Garden. This world famous dog show, established in 1877, is the second-longest running sporting tradition in the country after the Kentucky Derby. Every year, more than 2,500 dogs compete to be the Best in Show. Tickets must be purchased by December and range around $130 each, plus fees.

    Museums

    • New York is also home to some of the best museums in the world. You can spend your days visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the modern art of MOMA and the Guggenheim or explore some of the lesser known museums such as El Museo del Barrio or the Sex Museum. Since New York City is home to hundreds of museum (many abutting Central Park), finding one to match your interests will not be difficult.
