Things to Do on a Road Trip to Alaska

Traveling to and through Alaska on a road trip takes visitors through scenic towns and along highways and byways that provide views of the state not always appreciated via other modes of transportation. The vastness of the state provides ample things to do while traveling. A road trip along Route 3 in Alaska can take travelers to noteworthy spots throughout the state.

  1. Denali National Park & Preserve

    • Denali National Park & Preserve lies just about in the center part of the state. Located 120 miles south of Fairbanks and 240 north of Anchorage, the area is accessible by car. In fact, there is one road leading in and out of the park, which is right off of Route 3. Route 3, also referred to as the George Parks Highway, is a scenic highway spanning Alaska from Fairbanks to Anchorage and is convenient for those on a road trip through the center of the state. Travelers to Denali National Park can experience the highest mountain peak in North America, Mount McKinley, which is located in the park and rises more than 20,000 feet above the Alaskan landscape. The park encompasses more than 9,400 square miles of Alaskan territory. Visitors can participate in events such as backpacking, cycling, hiking, hunting and fishing.

    University of Alaska Museum

    • The University of Alaska Museum is located in Fairbanks and is accessible via Route 3. The museum is housed on the grounds of the University of Alaska's Fairbanks campus and is a treasure trove of cultural and historical artifacts of Alaskan history and culture. Exhibits include a mummified bison, gold from the initial gold rush heyday of Alaska, Russian artifacts and indigenous Indian artifacts. There is also a cafe located within the museum serving light fare. Highlighted throughout the museum are animals, flora, fauna, Indian and Russian culture and artwork. A variety of specialty films and presentations are hosted at the museum and audio devices to aide with museum tours are also available for guests.

    Alaska Native Heritage Center

    • The Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage is located close to Route 1, which is easily accessible by traveling Route 3. The center focuses on the preservation, education and culture associated with Native Americans from the indigenous tribes of the Pacific Northwest. Native dance performances, musical events, storytellers and events take place at the center. The center also houses a Hall of Cultures, which depicts the history and current state of Indian life and highlights include exhibits of traditional tools, artwork, clothing, musical instruments and various other cultural items.
