East Coast Florida Attractions

While Florida's Western Gulf Coast boasts balmy beaches, the state's east coast is known for attracting million of visitors every year for NASCAR's Daytona 500 and college spring break. Florida's Gold Coast also provides unlimited opportunities for year-round indoor and outdoor activities. With museums, animal parks and aquariums, state and national parks and wildlife refugees, there is much to see and do on Florida's East Coast.

  1. Everglades National Park

    • According to the National Park Service, the 1.5 million acres that encompass Everglades National Park compose the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. Everglades National Park is less than a half hour from Miami and is open year round, seven days a week. The park claims more than 40 rare species of animals, some of them endangered. Everglades National Park offers interpretive programs, guided tours, art exhibits and nature centers. Food and dining services are available, as well as front- and back-country camping. Campground reservations are recommended and can be placed by phone or online. Pets are allowed, but must be kept on a leash.

    HistoryMiami

    • HistoryMiami is a museum chronicling the history and culture of Southern Florida, and the Caribbean, from prehistoric times. The museum holds exhibits on topics including natural disasters, Florida's exploration, immigration and first inhabitants, prohibition and law enforcement. The museum provides school classroom, adult and family programs. The second Saturday of every month is Family Day, with free admission. HistoryMiami also has a research center and library open to the public. HistoryMiami is open daily, except Mondays and holidays.

    Kennedy Space Center

    • The Kennedy Space Center is open everyday, except Christmas and days when launches are planned. The center offers two-hour tours, starting every 15 minutes, exhibits and shows featuring the Astronaut Hall of Fame, space flight simulators and IMAX® space films. Opportunities to register to attend a space shuttle launch are available at certain times. Admission passes are good for two days in a seven day period, parking is included in the admission price. Pets are not allowed in the center, however the complex provides free on-site kennel service for visitors. Service animals are permitted in the center. Weapons and sharp objects are prohibited.

    Daytona International Speedway

    • The Daytona International Speedway draws visitors from around the globe for Speedweek, a week-long series of motor racing events held in February, culminating with the annual running of the Daytona 500 NASCAR race. There is also a museum tracing the history and winners of one of the most storied 500-mile auto races.
