Located along the border between Michigan and Canada, the Detroit River is part of the Great Lakes system. The river separates the metropolitan areas of Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario. Originally commissioned as a gambling ship along the Mississippi River, the Detroit Princess Riverboat can accommodate up to 1500 passengers and offers a number of different cruises Thursday through Sunday, including occasional weekday lunch cruises. Themed dinner cruises include a Motown Cruise, Murder Mystery Cruise, Family Cruise and Sunset Cruise. The Detroit Princess can be hired for private events. Prices vary based on the type of cruise and age of guests. The Detroit Princess does not accept credit cards or Canadian currency on board for purchases. The ship docks near the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel.

Diamond Jack’s River Tours offers a two-hour narrated tour of either the upper or lower part of the Detroit River. The tours highlight the Detroit and Windsor skylines and offer a brief history of the area. Running from June to September, tours are offered twice daily Thursday through Sunday, departing at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Charters may also be arranged. Tickets can be purchased onboard with cash only; food and drinks may be purchased onboard, too. Child and senior discounts are available. The upper Detroit River tour departs from Rivard Plaza and the lower river tour departs from Bishop Park in Wyandotte.

Set to open in September 2010 with special events cruising, Windsor River Cruises out of Windsor, Ontario, will offer sightseeing and dinner cruises along the Detroit River. Children can avail of discounted prices for both, the sightseeing and dinner cruises. Windsor River Cruises depart from Festival Plaza in Windsor and are available for charters and special events. These cruises are approximately 2 1/2 hours long.
