Famous Malls & Department Stores in New York

New York has been called the shopping capital of the world. No matter what you may be looking for, there's an excellent chance you find it in one the thousands of city stores. Some of those stores are quite famous and are fun to visit without even buying anything.

  1. Macy's

    • The flagship store of the Macy's line takes up a full city block in Herald Square. If you're looking for clothes, electronics, cosmetics or virtually anything else, Macy's probably has it. The store opened in 1902 and also features several restaurants and cafes on its bottom floor. Macy's sits just a few blocks from the Empire State Building and offers a fantastic view of the iconic building at its 34th Street entrance. A major reason for the store's fame is the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which has been stepping off every year since 1924. This helps make Macy's one of New York's best-known tourist attractions.

    Bloomingdale's

    • Macy's touts itself as the biggest store in the world. But it's not the only major department store in New York. Bloomingdale's is located on the Upper East Side and offers much of the same products as Macy's. For those looking to avoid the name-brand items and save a little money, Bloomingdale's has its own line of various products. Bloomie's, as the locals call it, opened in 1927 and is also a tourist attraction. Like Macy's, Bloomingdale's has a visitor's center to help you navigate through the mammoth store. If you don't feel like lugging all your purchases around, you can ship them home at the visitor's center.

    Manhattan Mall

    • Large department stores are not the only places to shop in New York. The Manhattan Mall is New York's only indoor shopping mall and features numerous national retailers. It is just a short walk from Macy's and close to Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. The mall occupies the building that once housed Gimbel's department store. That store was a fierce rival to Macy's and Bloomingdale's before closing in 1986. The Manhattan Mall, which opened in 1995, may not be the tourist attraction the major department stores are. But it does offer the convenience in finding all kinds of different stores under one roof.
