Bars in Milledgeville, Georgia

Milledgeville, Ga., is a college town, and college students still being in love with alcoholic beverages, Milledgeville has its quota of night clubs and bars, including ones that also serve food. Although Milledgeville -- a city in central Georgia with a population of 18,757 -- has grown over the decades in its own right, many businesses cater to the students. In doing so, they also provide places for visitors to go.

  1. History

    • During the Civil War, 10 gallons of wiskey were buried, then unearthed, for the Yankees.

In addition to being the home of Georgia College and State University, Milledgeville was also once the state capital before it moved on to Atlanta. It was the capital when Union General William Tecumseh Sherman occupied the town in the fall of 1864. Although no bars were mentioned in the Civil War and city histories reviewed for this article, it was noted in one -- "Marching through Georgia," by Lee Kennett -- that the owner of a hotel buried 10 gallons of whiskey prior to the arrival of the Yankees. The cache was unearthed once the Union soldiers settled in, the author noted. One can presume that the hotel served alcoholic beverages. In recent times, bars and nightclubs have become part of the city's landscape.

Nightclubs and bars in recent news

    • No charges were filed against professional football player Ben Roethlisberger in a recent Milledgeville assault case.

Nightclubs and bars in Milledgeville became news in early spring this year when professional football player Ben Roethlisberger, the quarterback for the Pittsburg Steelers, was accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman at the Capital City nightclub. The woman told police it happened in the women's restroom. The incident made headlines across the country, amid charges that the city's police may have been too cozy with the professional athlete. Since then, Roethlisberger has gone free amid rumors that he paid off the woman, who declined to file charges against the quarterback. However, Roethlisberger did receive a suspension from the NFL until October and must sit out games until then. And in late spring, bars in Milledgeville were under close scrutiny by police as the mayor attempted to clean up the city's image.
