There are numerous types of martial arts throughout the world. Some of the most popular types include Karate, Kung Fu, Taekwondo, Jujitsu, Judo, Tai Chi and Mauy Thai. While they differ in origin and techniques, all martial arts are beneficial in the areas of physical fitness, stress relief, respect, confidence and concentration. Hawaii is the home to six major islands and martial arts schools specializing in areas such as Taekwondo, Jujitsu and Kung Fu.
The U.S. Tae Kwon Do Center in Honolulu focuses on physical fitness, self-discipline, self-defense and improving self-esteem and confidence. The school's master instructor from South Korea is a sixth-degree black belt and nine-time U.S. National Champion. All other instructors hold a second-degree black belt or higher and are required to complete martial arts leadership training before teaching. Students are expected to attend class regularly and test for the next belt within a year.

The Brazilian Freestyle Jiu-Jitsu (BFJJ) association in Hawaii operates three academies including the BFJJ Manoa Academy, BFJJ Maui Academy and BFJJ Waipahu Academy. The BFJJ Manoa Academy is located within the University of Hawaii at Manoa Campus. The campus is located on Honolulu and was founded in 1994. The academy is recognized as an official Registered Independent Organization (RIO), with classes instructed by Professor Romolo Barros. The BFJJ Maui Academy is located within Peak Performance on Maui, which is a training facility in boxing, Muay Thai and Jiu-JItsu. The BFJJ Waipahu Academy is located within the Hawaii Karate Federation (HFK) Martial Arts Center.

The Gee Yung International Martial Arts Dragon and Lion Dance Association in Honolulu is a family-owned martial arts school for over 60 years. It specializes in the Dragon and Lion Dance, Kung Fu and Muay Thai. Kung Fu is taught in the Sil Lum Fut Ga Kuen style, which incorporates techniques from Shaolin Kung Fu and Chinese boxing in addition to aspects from both northern and southern Kung Fu styles. The school is the first in Hawaii to play the Luminous Dragon, which involves a nine-person team to take the poles.
