Things to Do in San Francisco at Christmas

San Francisco is known for a lot of things -- sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge, steep and quaint neighborhood streets and a booming art scene, to name a few. But the City by the Bay also puts on a lively holiday celebration every year.

  1. Great Dickens Christmas Fair & Holiday Party

    • If you're visiting San Francisco between late November and late December, be sure to stop by the Great Dickens Christmas Fair and Victorian Holiday Party. Perfect for all ages, the Dickens Holiday Fair transforms more than 3 acres of exhibition halls to recreate Christmas in old London. Fairgoers encounter an earlier era with costumed characters, old-fashioned favorites offered by street food vendors, carolers and one of a kind gifts for sale.

    Union Square Ice Skating

    • After a busy day checking items off of your gift list in Union Square -- San Francisco’s top shopping area -- be sure enjoy ice skating at the Holiday Ice Rink. At night, the gigantic Christmas tree and city skyline are lit up, providing spectacular, 360-degree views. Skating sessions run 90 minutes long and skates are available for rental.

    The Festival of Lights

    • Fisherman’s Wharf transforms for the Festival of Lights, a dazzling show of lights and decorations for Christmas. Beginning after Thanksgiving and running through Christmas, the Festival of Lights decks out area buildings and lagoons in ornamentation. Sample treats from the local eateries and bakeries as you stroll through the attraction.

    Holiday Shows

    • Performances abound in San Francisco year-round, and holiday shows are featured during the Christmas season. The Great American Music Hall offers at least one holiday-specific show each year. Take in a performance of the Nutcracker at the famed Ruth Finley Person Theater. Classical music enthusiasts will revel in the San Francisco Symphony’s diverse selection of holiday-themed performances.
