Every year from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, Daley Plaza in the Loop turns into a German-style marketplace. Admission is free, and vendors sell Old World items such as handmade ornaments, jewelry, mittens and scarves. German foods such as sauerkraut, waffles and potato pancakes are also for sale for hungry visitors, as well as hot spiced wine. The biggest Christmas tree in Chicago is set up in the middle of the plaza, which is lit the day after Thanksgiving. Santa's House is also open on the weekends, where kids can tell Santa what they want for Christmas.

For the entire month of December, Lincoln Park Zoo puts on ZooLights, one of the most popular free winter events in Chicago. The whole zoo is illuminated with bright and colorful lights, usually creating the shapes of zoo animals such as giraffes and monkeys. The indoor animal exhibits are all open late so visitors can see the animals. Be sure to wear a warm coat.

From mid-November to mid-March, Millennium Park opens its ice skating rink, complete with skate rentals. This is a popular activity for a winter date in Chicago. And just north of the park is the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Avenue), which is heavily decorated with white Christmas lights during the holiday season. Couples and families can enjoy the carriage rides down the Magnificent Mile.
