Gillette sits on Interstate 90 in northeastern Wyoming, about halfway between the South Dakota border and Buffalo. A substantially-sized Wyoming city with a population of about 23,000 (2010), Gillette's economy depends largely on the coal mining industry in the Powder River Basin. Tourist activities in Gillette include exploration of the area's coal connections, both past and present, along with a diverse selection of other entertainment options.
Open 9 to 5 Monday through Saturday (except holidays), the Campbell County Rockpile Museum invites you to journey into Gillette's past, free of charge. Here, you'll learn not only about this region's longtime relationship with coal mining, but also other historical details about the area, including its pioneer days, American Indians, and natural history. Children will be entertained with touchable exhibits that include dressing up in period clothing.
