Tourist Attractions in Wyoming

Wyoming has the lowest population of all 50 states with 544,270 people, according to the U.S. Census Bureau estimates in 2009. But that doesn't mean you won't find any attractions in this western state. Most of the things to see involve the outdoors and natural scenery. You can also learn about Buffalo Bill Cody and pioneers of the American West.
  1. Buffalo Bill Historical Center

    • The Buffalo Bill Historical Center in northwestern Wyoming contains five museums. The Buffalo Bill Museum tells the story of W.F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody's life. His outdoor show, "Buffalo Bill's Wild West," toured the country and Europe from 1883 to 1913 and included Annie Oakley and Sitting Bull. The Cody Firearms Museum claims to have the most comprehensive collection of American firearms. The items include the Winchester Collection, as well as items from other major firearm manufacturers. The Draper Museum of Natural History, the Whitney Gallery of Western Art and the Plains Indian Museum are also housed in the center.

    Grand Teton National Park

    • Part of Wyoming's reputation as an outdoor playground is due to the Grand Teton National Park. The grounds contain six campgrounds and a wealth of activities such as back-country camping, biking, bird watching, boating, climbing, fishing and horseback riding. Park rangers give guided tours such as hikes---snowshoe hikes in the winter---and wildlife viewing. The John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway, which covers 24,000 acres, connects Grand Teton National Park from its southern boundary to Yellowstone National Park's West Thumb.

    Yellowstone National Park

    • Yellowstone National Park was the country's first national park after being established in 1872. The park features dozens of geysers and hot springs. The Old Faithful Area houses nearly 30 of them. Old Faithful shoots out boiling water in an average interval of about 91 minutes, making it the most frequent of the park's big geysers. The Steamboat Geyser in the Norris Geyser Basin part of the park, however, is the world's tallest active geyser with eruptions of over 300 feet, according to the National Park Service. Yellowstone National Park also has a range of outdoor activities, including camping, horseback riding and hiking.
