Wyoming's Weather in July

Like most parts of the United States, July is among the warmest months of the year in Wyoming. But unlike many other places in the country, Wyoming's climate is affected by the Rocky Mountains, which creates greater temperature extremes. If you're traveling to Wyoming, what you pack will primarily depend on what part of the state you're visiting.

  1. Average Temperature

    • The average temperature in Wyoming in July depends on what part of the state you're visiting. In the capitol of Cheyenne, which is in the state's southeast corner, the average high is 82 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average low is 54 degrees. In Cody, which is in northwestern Wyoming near Yellowstone National Park, the average high is 84 degrees Fahrenheit, and the low is 54 degrees. In the mountainous southwestern corner of the state, near Evanston, the average highs are similar, at 84 degrees Fahrenheit. It is often dramatically cooler in the evening there, with an average low of 45 degrees.

    Rainfall

    • Different parts of the state also receive different rainfall totals. Cheyenne receives about 2.1 inches of precipitation in July. Evanston averages about 1 inch of rain in July, as does Cody and the city of Sheridan, which is located in the northeastern part of the state.

    Mountain Effects

    • Even in the peak of July's summer heat, high-elevation locations in Wyoming may drop below freezing overnight. The mountain ranges also affect precipitation amounts. Summertime showers are frequent, but they rarely drop more than a few hundredths of an inch of rain, according to the Western Regional Climate Center.

    Inclement Weather

    • Tornadoes can form in July in Wyoming, which has a severe weather season that generally extends from April to September. However, the months of May and June see more tornadoes than July does. The greatest threat during the summer months is from hail storms, says the Western Regional Climate Center. According to charts provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the southeast corner of the state is at the greatest risk for tornadoes and hail. Windy conditions are also common in July in Wyoming. Sometimes, the winds carry destructive force. The risk of damaging wind is most common in the central and northern parts of the state.
