Mountain Island Lake is a man-made lake, created in 1925 as part of the Mountain Island Hydroelectric Station project. The more than 3-acre lake now helps drive turbine-energy and provide electricity for the greater Charlotte area. The lake also supports water recreation opportunities with more than 61 miles of shoreline and several boat ramps and fishing. A few hotels on the outskirts of Charlotte are located near the lake.
