Jamestown is an historic city that was the first English settlement and the first capital of Virginia. The settlement has been recreated and is now a major tourist attraction in Virginia.
Living history is the prime exhibit in Jamestown. Visitors experience a colonial fort and a Powhatan Indian village, and have the opportunity to try on armor and grind corn.
Historically accurate costumed guides take tourists through the experience of Africans in 17th century America, bringing attention to the skills they brought with them, and how their encounters with Europeans had an impact on their culture.
Tourists learn about 17th century construction, word working and metal skills from an interpretive guide. They also have the opportunity to board a replica of one of the three ships that sailed from England to Virginia.
An on-going archaeological dig in Jamestown by the Jamestown Rediscovery Project has unearthed over one million artifacts. Tourists can visit the Archaearium, a museum exhibiting their findings.
Tourists can take a break and eat in one of the restaurants in Jamestown or wander through the gift shops for souvenirs. Jamestown is open daily, but closed on Christmas and New Year's Day.
