Statesboro is the county seat of Bulloch County, which is 50 miles west of Savannah and 200 miles southeast of Atlanta. U.S. Routes 25, 80 and 301 intersect each other at downtown Statesboro; the city is 10 miles north of Interstate 16.
The town of Statesborough was created in 1803 as a marketplace for area farmers to trade goods. The city was incorporated in 1866 as Statesboro; it grew as a major market for cotton and tobacco. First District Agricultural and Mechanical School opened in 1908; it later became Georgia Teachers College and, ultimately, Georgia Southern University.
Statesboro tourist attractions include Georgia Southern's Botanical Garden, University Museum, Performing Arts Center and Wildlife Education Center. Bulloch County is also home to Splash in the Boro Family Waterpark and Meinhardt Vineyards. Additionally, various antique shopping options line South Main Street and Highway 67.
Major hotel chains are located at North and South Main in downtown Statesboro. Bed and breakfasts are also situated around the city's four Main Streets.
