Lakes Near Spartanburg, South Carolina

Spartanburg, South Carolina, in the northwest corner of the state, is an Old South town surrounded by the green foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The city offers an abundance of recreational opportunities, from hiking and mountain biking to kayaking and fishing in the Tyger River or Glendale Shoals. Spartanburg is near several lakes popular with outdoors enthusiasts, particularly in the summer.

  1. Lake Bowen

    • Lake Bowen is a reservoir formed by the waters of the South Pacolet River and its tributaries in 1960. Its official name, given it by Commissioners of Spartanburg Water: Lake William C. Bowen. The lake covers 1,534 acres and has 33 miles of shoreline. Boating, fishing, kayaking and swimming are among the popular recreational activities the lake offers. Spartanburg also built a recreational park, Anchor Park, which offers picnic pavilions, a playground, shore fishing, a playground and two boat ramps.

    Lake Blalock

    • Lake Blalock is a reservoir, officially known as Lake H. Taylor Blalock. The Commissioners of Spartanburg Water authorized its creation in 1976, and the lake was developed in 1983. Lake Blalock measures 1,105 acres and ringed by about 45 miles of shoreline. The lake offers many recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing and swimming. Spartanburg Water also built a recreational park, Lake Blalock Park, which has picnic pavilions, a fishing dock and a boating ramp.

    Lake Cooley

    • Lake Cooley is a reservoir established by the Startex-Jackson-Wellford-Duncan Water District in Spartanburg County. The SJWD maintains a boat ramp on Lake Cooley and allows boating and fishing. Jet skis and water-skiing are not allowed. The SJWD accepts day or half day reservations for the picnic shelter. Lake Cooley also has a fishing pier.

    Lyman Lake

    • Lyman Lake is a reservoir created by the Startex-Jackson-Wellford-Duncan Water District. Water-skiing is allowed on Lyman Lake. Other popular activities include boating and fishing, and the SJWD maintains a boat ramp on Lyman Lake. Lyman Lake also has a lodge that can be reserved for the half-day or the full day.
