Events in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

A historic town in West Virginia, Harpers Ferry is best known for the raid on the armory in the city led by an abolitionist, John Brown. The raid was a tipping point for the start of the Civil War, and has since become Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Throughout the year, events are offered to visitors and residents alike to learn about the city and its historical relevance.

  1. Old Tyme Christmas

    • Each year, Harpers Ferry celebrates Christmas the old-fashioned way. The historical city transforms itself into a winter wonderland, complete with lights, bows and garland, and many of the shops feature events of their own to entertain visitors. During the weekends in December, visits from Santa, storytelling, arts and crafts, live music, caroling and puppet shows all bring in the Christmas spirit to town.

The Christmas extravaganza begins right after Thanksgiving and runs through the first week of January. If you are staying in the Washington, DC area, Harpers Ferry is only a 1-hour drive or train ride away.

    Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

    • Not only is the beauty of Harpers Ferry something to see, but the historical town is like a step back in time with the shops on quiet streets, natural trails and museums. If you are in the mood for a history lesson for the whole family, the National Park features events throughout the summer to give families a hands-on approach to life in Harpers Ferry more than 100 years ago. Events include garden tending, talking to a solider during reenactments, churning butter, playing lawn games and learning how to become a Civil War soldier. In addition to hands-on events, explore the beauty of the surrounding area with hikes on the Appalachian Trail or to Jefferson Rock.
