Texas Thanksgiving Getaways

Texas just may be an unrealized paradise. Although many people may view Texas as flat, dry and stark, in fact, there is a large eco-diversity in the state, not to mention many interesting places and activities to explore throughout the year, including during the Thanksgiving weekend.

  1. Lost Maples State Natural Area

    • This area, in the southwest part of Texas Hill Country, is surrounded by bluffs, rolling hills and flat-top mesas. Springs run through the limestone canyons and through tree-lined meadows, and there is an abundance of wildlife, too. It is especially pretty in November when, during autumn, you can take in the foliage changes on the big-tooth maple trees in the area. You can go hiking along two beautiful trails within the park, there are also nice camping areas here. If you do not want to camp you can stay at the Lodges at Lost Maples, a bed and breakfast between the towns of Vanderpool and Leakey, close to the state park.

    Austin

    • Austin is comprised of a variety of eclectic people who contribute to its style and atmosphere. This city seems to mix urban pleasure with outdoor recreation, and fall is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoor bars and cafes because of the mild weather. If you like Mediterranean food then you wants to try FINO with its "tapas" influence. At night visit Uncorked Tasting Room and Bar on the east side of town for a view of the Austin skyline at night. If you want to experience real Austin live music and night life go to Copa Bar and Grill. This place is hopping with live Latin music and free Salsa dance classes. You will find all kinds of music coming from theaters, clubs, outdoor lake restaurants, and halls in the downtown area. It is a truly bohemian atmosphere, and makes a great place to go for a Thanksgiving long weekend getaway. Location is important in Austin, so you want to stay in a hotel that is centrally located like the Hotel San Jose, the Barton Creek Resort, or the Four Seasons Austin.

    Jefferson, Texas

    • Jefferson was founded in 1840 as a river port, and throughout the 19th century paddleboats ran up and down the river just as they did in New Orleans. Today, much of that southern, river town charm still exists in Jefferson and most of the historical homes and buildings have been restored to their original grandeur. There are more than 30 bed and breakfasts, guest houses, and inns here. The White Oak Bed & Breakfast has beautiful Victorian style rooms, and offers relaxing massage therapy for guests. Tthe Delta Street Inn, which was built in prairie style in 1920, has been carefully restored. Rooms are large and comfortable, and breakfast is lovely. Enjoy a lovely lunch or dinner at the Stillwater Inn while strolling in town. Spend the afternoon strolling through the town, peeking in at the many antique shops, boutiques, and galleries.
