Finding vegan fare can be a challenge even in a bustling metropolis. On an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, it can be a bit more daunting. If that island happens to be Maui, however, you're in luck--many a vegan has dined his way around the isle, so you're unlikely to run into a restaurant that truly can't accommodate you. Of these, there are a couple of not-to-be-missed restaurants for those who shun animal products.
Driving through the tiny town of Paia, the subtle waft of patchouli through the windows is a dead giveaway: you're in a hippie town. As such, you'd expect that there would be a vegan restaurant here, and you'd be right. Fresh Mint is a casual spot with an authentically southeast-Asian flair. The vegan pho is not to be missed, and neither is the Fresh Mint specialty salad. There's also a full contingent of mock meat entrees on the menu.

Veg Out is an intimate little counter-service cafe with a mostly local crowd. Not completely vegan (but very vegan-friendly), the restaurant boasts a variety of choices. It's the only place on the island where you can pick up a vegan pizza. Offerings also include the standard salads, wraps, veggie burgers, meatless entrees, and a really standout carrot juice fresh from the juicer.

With a menu bursting with vegan choices and an absolutely spectacular view, Monsoon is a fantastic vegan destination. Vegan diners rave about the bengan bartha and the aloo parathas, and every single one of the appetizers is currently vegan. The bring-your-own policy regarding beer and wine helps the prices stay surprisingly reasonable, especially on such a notoriously expensive island. The friendly, interested service is also a big plus.
