Things to Do on Sunday in Fort Myers

Sunday might be a slow day in a lot of places. But in Fort Myers, Florida, there's plenty for visitors to see and do. With the Gulf Coast's pleasant climate, outdoor activities are usually a possibility on Sunday. There's no shortage of indoor culture and entertainment available on that day of the week either.

  1. Fort Myers' Great Outdoors

    • Hit the beaches. Fort Myers Beach in particular is a great place to pass a lazy Sunday. Especially on Sundays, you can park yourself on the white sands, or you can go to Town Square to watch people.

Fish don't care what day of the week it is, with coastal, backwater and deep-sea fishing all possibilities for a leisurely Sunday. For golfers, Sunday can be a great day to hit the links in Fort Myers. There are about 50 public and private courses in the area. But be sure to book in advance if possible, since a lot of other golfers have the same idea.

Sunday open-air shopping is also an option in Fort Myers. The Gulf Coast Town Center, for example has about 120 shops. Shops keep their own hours, but in general the shopping center is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For a different kind of Sunday shopping experience, visit Fleamaster's Fleamarket, which sports hundreds of unique little shops from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

    Indoor Fun

    • Many of Fort Myers cultural attractions keep Sunday hours. The Edison & Ford Winter Estates are open from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays, and so is the Fort Myers Historical Museum. You can also take in the Imaginarium Hands-On Museum on Sunday (noon to 5 p.m.) and the Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium as well (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

Some of Fort Myers' performing arts venues, such as the Florida Repertory Theatre and the Barbara B. Man Performing Arts Hall, have periodic Sunday performances; best to check their schedules ahead of time. Not far from Fort Myers is the Seminole Casino Immokalee, with its slots, blackjack, poker and fine dining available anytime on Sunday, because the casino is open 24/7.

Before visiting any of these places, however, you might want to enjoy a Sunday brunch. There are a number of options for a feast of that kind, both in Fort Myers and the surrounding towns.

    Explore the Area

    • The roads don't close on Sunday in Florida, and there's a lot of places a curious traveler can go within easy reach of Fort Myers, both along the coast and inland a little.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands are justly famed for their beaches and seafood, and for nature enthusiasts, there's the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge on more than half of Sanibel.

Cape Coral, the city to the south of Fort Myers, offers its own variety of Sunday activities, such as the Sun Splash Family WaterPark (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. everyday) and Mike Greenwell's Family Fun Park (10 a.m. to 10 p.m Sunday). A touch of nature can be found in Cape Coral, too, at Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve, where you can walk through a mangrove swamp or rent a kayak on Saturdays and Sundays.

Further south of metro Fort Myers is Bonita Springs and Estero, which offer a quiet Sunday retreat on the beautiful Bonita Beach, or walking along boardwalks in nature preserves, or gawking at the animals and oddities at the Everglades Wonder Gardens, open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, including Sundays.
