Free Things to Do in Orlando for a Family

Orlando, Florida, is a popular tourist destination for various reasons. While a lot of people associate a trip to Orlando with a visit to Walt Disney World or Universal Studios, trips to amusement parks can be quite expensive. However, there are various things your family can do in Orlando that won't cost you any money.

  1. Disney's Boardwalk and Downtown Disney Marketplace

    • Owned by Walt Disney World, Disney's Boardwalk is a recreation of a 1930s-style Atlantic coastal village. The boardwalk sits on a 45-acre waterfront and is best known for its nightlife and various clubs. However, admission to Disney's Boardwalk in Orlando is completely free and visitors can stroll along and watch the various magicians and street performers at no cost.

Also owned by Walt Disney World is the Downtown Disney Marketplace. Downtown Disney is filled with various shops and restaurants, but there are some great activities that your family can enjoy for free. At Arribas Brothers, guests are welcome to watch the glass blowers. A visit to the Lego Imagination Center offers families the opportunity to compete in a "beat the clock" building contest. You can also see the 30-foot sea serpent or the 12-foot T-Rex that are both built with thousands of Legos.

    Old Town

    • Old Town is a unique amusement park and shopping area. While the rides do cost money, admission to Old Town is free and there are plenty of things visitors can enjoy at no cost. Entertainment might include things like Bike Night when hundreds of motorcycles cruise the streets, or a vintage car parade. Old Town is open 365 days a year and on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays it offers free shows.

    A World of Orchids

    • For visitors who enjoy flowers and want to appreciate various types of tropical foliage, the 22,500-square-foot A World of Orchids conservatory offers free admission. View various species of flowers, including orchids. You can also admire natural exhibits that showcase places such as South and Central America, Southeast Asia, Australia, and Indonesia.
