Akron, Ohio, is located 39 miles south of Cleveland. Akron provides many things to see and do, but it doesn't have to be an expensive trip. It is possible for Akron's visitors to enjoy an affordable vacation with the help of various free activities.
The Akron Police Museum is located in downtown Akron. Outside the building is the police memorial wall that honors officers that have given their lives in the line of duty. The museum focuses on the history of the Akron Police Department. The exhibits featured include things like confiscated weapons, counterfeit money, narcotics paraphernalia and various photographs.
Dr. Bob is Dr. Robert Holbrook Smith, the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Dr. Bob, who was a recovering alcoholic himself, and his wife Anne allowed recovering alcoholics to stay with them in the home until they could manage their addiction on their own. Located at 855 Ardmore Avenue, the house was declared a National Historic Landmark in October 1985, and since then the house has been restored to as it was when Dr. Bob and his wife resided there.
The Akron Skate Park covers more than 19,000 square feet and is made of fiberglass-reinforced concrete. The park features areas that are designated for different levels of skaters. The areas include ledges, rails, quarter pipes, a four-sided pyramid for stunts, and a 65-foot snake roll leading into a large bowl that sinks down 7 feet. Visitors can watch the skaters on their skateboards or join in on the skating fun.
Lock 3 is an outdoor amphitheater that hosts a variety of shows and events. On Friday nights throughout each summer, the amphitheater provides free concerts. There's also a farmers market on the last Saturday of each month from May through October. Home Grown Saturday mornings gives local growers and farmers a chance to sell their own fresh fruits, vegetables and home-baked treats. There are also free family activities such as science projects for kids, historic trolley rides, the Lock 3 History Museum and American Toy & Marble Exhibit.
