Hawaii's high season is from December to April. A majority of the state's visitors come during this time. The summer (June through August) is hotter and beaches are crowded with locals. However, prices are cheaper. Fall is arguably the best time of year to visit. The islands are less crowded and prices are still at their off-season lows.
Hawaii is composed of six major islands: Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and the Big Island. Oahu is the most populated island. It includes the city of Honolulu and the famed Waikiki Beach. It is filled with resorts, hotels and rental condos. Maui also has a full slate of resorts. The other islands are ideal places to enjoy a quieter vacation and experience Hawaii's natural beauty.
Many of Hawaii's attractions are free to visit. Its public beaches and parks do not charge admission. In addition, restaurants and grocery stores that cater to locals are quite a bit cheaper than those whose main clientele are tourists.
Oahu's public transportation system is decent. However, other islands are sorely lacking in terms of transit. It will be necessary to rent a car to get around. Flights between islands are relatively cheap, as are inter-island ferries. On smaller islands, it is possible to get around by bicycle or even on foot. Most major resorts offer shuttle service.
