Things to Do in Nachitoches, Louisiana

Natchitoches, Louisiana, is perhaps most famous as the setting for the popular 1980s movie "Steel Magnolias." The historic town, which was settled in 1714, may be small--with a population of less than 20,000--but visitors will find plenty to keep them busy. Because Natchitoches is firmly rooted in the history of the area, much of what visitors can do involves learning about and celebrating the area's past, but people looking for an adventure won't be disappointed.

  1. Sightseeing

    • Because of its rich history, Natchitoches and the surrounding area are full of interesting sights. The Red River used to run through Natichtoches, and several plantations were built along the river. The river course has since changed, but a 30-mile waterway called Cane River Lake is still home to several plantations that can be toured daily. Other sightseeing opportunities include several museums and historic churches and buildings. Another popular destination is the Natchitoches National Fish Hatchery, which features an aquarium and ponds that showcase many fish species native to the southeastern United States.

    Recreational Activities

    • People who enjoy the outdoors will find plenty of activities in Natchitoches. The possibilities include fishing and canoeing or kayaking on waterways including Cane River Lake and Sibley Lake. The Kisatchie National Forest is also popular with outdoor lovers. Among the activities at the national forest are hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, swimming and picnicking. Natchitoches also has facilities for golfers and tennis players. Both the Natchitoches Country Club and Northwestern Hills Golf Course offer golf and tennis.

    Shopping

    • The Natchitoches Historic District is full of shopping and dining opportunities for visitors. Shoppers will find gift and souvenir shops, bookstores, antique shops, art galleries and a general store. The Historic District is also home to several restaurants and eateries serving everything from tea to oysters. Natchitoches also has a farmer's market called the Cane River Green Market, which is held Saturdays from April to July. Shoppers can purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, homemade jellies and handmade crafted items.
