San Antonio‘s city motto is viva fiesta--live to party! Labor Day in San Antonio is a party that lasts all weekend. Celebrations often are held outdoors. Outdoor things to do in San Antonio include barbecues by the lake, on the river, in the park or in the back yard. The city commemorates the holiday with various special events. Several events are held annually, and new ones are added frequently.
Come early on the day prior to Labor Day to ensure a great spot in the park. Bring your camping gear and get comfortable. All-out picnics with tablecloths, piñatas, balloons, kids and dogs create the atmosphere for a great holiday. For those who are not familiar with piñatas, they are Mexican paper-mache animals filled with candy. They are hung from a tree, and children are blindfolded and turned several times to disorient them. Then, they are given a stick to hit the piñata until it breaks open and spills out the candy.
The San Antonio River Walk is a favorite tourist attraction on any day. It is lined with restaurants, shops, clubs and hotels. The River Walk is also a favorite Labor Day destination. Take a guided tour on the Rio San Antonio River Walk Cruise. Cruise by the San Fernando Cathedral, La Villita, and the Alamo on a large, colorful boat.
Labor Day Arts & Crafts is an arts-and-crafts show located along the River Walk Extension. The River Walk Extension stretches from the Alamo Street Bridge to the Rivercenter Mall. Vendors sell pottery, fine art, and handmade jewelry during the Labor Day weekend.
