Since its origins as a way to celebrate the workers of America in the 1800s, Labor Day has become a popular time for Americans to enjoy a three-day weekend of activities and entertainment. In metropolitan Los Angeles, an area of over 10 million people, there is no shortage of things to do. From film festivals to county fairs, residents and visitors have a lot of activities to choose from on Labor Day.
With more workers in the film industry than any other city in the world, it is no surprise that Los Angeles hosts some of the most quirky and unique film festivals. Each year during the Labor Day holiday weekend, Cinecon runs a classic film festival of rare and unusual films from the silent movie era and early sound period. The multi-day festival culminates on Labor Day with multiple screenings. Cinephiles from all over the country gather during the organization's over 45 year-old festival to screen films, interact with other silent film enthusiasts, meet film historians, experts and buy artifacts at the festival's memorabilia show. Movies are shown at the historic Egyptian Theater in the heart of Hollywood. The Egyptian-themed Art Deco theater, a historic landmark, was built in 1922.

Los Angeles County, the most populous metro area in the country, starts on Labor Day weekend. On the holiday itself, admission is only $1 up until 1 p.m. The huge fair is mix of old and new with traditional activities like Ferris wheels, deep-fried food vendors, animal shows and games to win stuffed animals. Among the more modern touches are interactive high-tech exhibits, an art gallery and a rainforest exhibit that teaches children about protecting the environment. There is also an international wine and spirits marketplace where adults can shop and take part in wine tastings and seminars. A concert series featuring stars from all genres of music runs throughout the fair's duration.

The workers who are the backbone of the film industry spend Labor Day in a traditional pursuit. The Screen Actors Guild, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and members of the LA/Long Beach Labor Coalition join forces with workers from other industries for the largest Labor Day parade west of the Mississippi. The decades-old parade ends with a rally with speakers, live music and food vendors.
