George Vanderbilt first fell in love with Asheville, North Carolina, and the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains during a visit in his youth. He went on to purchase 125,000 acres of land there, and in 1889 construction began on his country retreat, the Biltmore House. It took six years to complete the French Renaissance-style home, which has a staggering number of bedrooms, bathrooms and features.
Indoor bathrooms as we know them today were rare when the Biltmore House was built, which makes it all the more impressive that the sprawling estate has a staggering 43 bathrooms. And with 35 bedrooms, the mansion was designed with ample accommodations for guests, who all could enjoy their own bathroom.
The Biltmore House has 250 rooms among 4 acres of floor space. The home has three full kitchens and 65 fireplaces, too. The banquet hall features majestic 70-foot high ceilings, and the library boasts a collection of 10,000 books. To get to the Biltmore mansion, you have to traverse a 3-mile approach road.
