Why do people call Boston terriers the American gentleman?

The Boston Terrier was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1893. While their exact origin is unknown, one theory is that the breed was developed by crossing Bulldogs with Terriers, resulting in a playful, affectionate, highly intelligent, and easy-to-train dog that quickly gained popularity.

As their numbers grew and they became more widespread in the United States, Boston Terriers were increasingly adopted by prominent Bostonians, who were often highly educated, wealthy, and influential in society. These well-to-do individuals came to be known as "gentlemen," and the Boston Terrier became their companion of choice.

With time, the association between the Boston Terrier and these gentlemen became so strong that the breed itself earned the moniker "American Gentleman." To this day, Boston Terriers are still often referred to by that name as a nod to their historical association with Boston's elite.
