What are Potential International Alliances for JetBlue?

In March 2009, JetBlue CEO Dave Barger indicated the airline's interest in potentially joining an international alliance. Since 2007, JetBlue has forged a number of agreements with airlines, including Aer Lingus, American Airlines, Lufthansa and South African Airways. These partnerships may facilitate membership in international airline alliances, such as Oneworld or Star Alliance. Decisions by its other partners who are not members of an alliance, such as Aer Lingus and Virgin Atlantic, may also influence JetBlue's affiliation.
  1. Existing Partnerships

    • As of April 2011, JetBlue has partnerhsip agreements with several airlines. Since 2007, it has had an agreement with Aer Lingus on connections to and from approximately 25 U.S. destinations. JetBlue's partnership with Lufthansa allows customers to travel between the U.S. and approximately 200 destinations, while its codeshare agreement with South African Airways offers connecting flights through New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport to approximately 40 destinations. The airline also cooperates with American Airlines and, as of March 2011, with Virgin Atlantic.

    Star Alliance

    • Star Alliance is a global airline network established in 1997. JetBlue currently has partnership agreements with two Star Alliance members: Lufthansa and South African Airways. Since 2009, JetBlue has operated the same reservation as Lufthansa. In addition to owning a stake in three other alliance members (Austrian, Brussels Airlines, and Swiss International Airlines), Lufthansa also owns a 15.6 percent share of JetBlue. The factors may influence JetBlue's decision to join the Star Alliance in the future.

    Oneworld

    • Established in 1999, Oneworld has 12 full members as of April 2011, including American Airlines, British Airways and Qantas. In 2010, JetBlue and American Airlines began cooperating on connecting flights to and from New York and Boston. The agreement included a commitment to explore other ways the airlines may cooperate in the future. In June 2010, Irish airline Aer Lingus, a former Oneworld member and JetBlue partner, signaled its intention to rejoin Oneworld or another alliance.

    SkyTeam

    • Founded in June 2000, SkyTeam is one of three international airline alliances. As of April 2011, SkyTeam comprises 13 airlines, including Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Delta Air Lines is the lone American airline in the alliance. JetBlue partner Aer Lingus announced in June 2010 that it would consider joining SkyTeam or another alliance. Virgin Atlantic, another JetBlue partner, also announced in April 2011 it was considering joining SkyTeam or another alliance.
