Southwest Airlines allows one small personal item such as a purse, laptop or briefcase in addition to one carry-on bag. Carry-on bag dimensions must not exceed 10-by-16-by-24 inches. Southwest limits liquids, gels and aerosols in carry-on baggage to three ounces for each product. The liquids must fit in a 1 qt. clear sealable bag. Larger quantities of juice, water, baby formula and medication may be allowed. Alcohol is not permitted in carry-on luggage. Transport unopened alcohol containers with checked baggage in the original container.
Southwest Airlines permits two checked bags per ticket at no cost. The bags may weigh up to 50 lbs. each and the dimensions must not exceed 62 inches. As of 2010, you will be charged $50 per bag over the size or weight limit up to 100 lbs.
All U.S. airlines comply with TSA guidelines on prohibited or restricted items. For safety reasons, many restrictions apply only to carry-on baggage. Items restricted from carry-on bags include, but are not limited to, sharp objects, large sporting items, firearms and their components, martial arts weapons, some tools, hazardous chemicals and torch lighters. All fuels, explosive materials and their components are banned from both carry-on and checked baggage. Southwest Airlines does allow firearms and ammunition in checked baggage, but not carry-on luggage; the guns must be unloaded and declared during your flight check-in.
Transport large or heavy sports items such as bowling balls, tennis rackets and golf clubs as checked baggage. These items apply towards the two-bag checked limit. Assistive devices for disabled individuals, car seats and strollers for children may be taken on the flight as carry-on luggage. These items do not count towards carry-on limits. Liquid oxygen tanks cannot be transported aboard Southwest Airlines. However, battery-operated portable oxygen concentrators are permitted.
