Which Airlines Have Domestic Bereavement Fares?

Unfortunately at some stage in life, most of us will be faced with the death of a very close friend or relative. A number of airlines offer special discounted fares to relatives of the deceased. In most cases, these fares will be a discount of around 50 percent of the full fare ticket price.
  1. American Airlines

    • American Airlines offers bereavement fares that can only be booked through the airline. The tickets can be issued by travel agents, but all changes have to be made by American Airlines directly. You must provide the deceased person's name, your relationship to them, the name and phone number of the funeral home, and the name of the doctor if applicable.

    Continental Airlines

    • Continental Airlines allows bereavement bookings to be made through its website. It gives 5 percent off round-trip fares of $499.99 and less, 10 percent off round-trip fares of $999.99 and less and 20 percent off round-trip fares of $1000 or more. You must provide the deceased person's name, your relationship to them, the name and phone number of the funeral home, and the name of the doctor if applicable.

    United Airlines

    • United Airlines offers emergency fares for different situations. These fees can only be obtained by contacting your local United reservations office or contacting the central United reservations office, not through the website.

    Delta Airlines

    • Bereavement fares are available on Delta for deaths in the immediate family. These can only be obtained by calling Delta ticketing offices directly, not from the Delta website. You must provide the deceased person's name, your relationship to them, the name and phone number of the funeral home, and the name of the doctor if applicable.
