Air Travel to Tanzania

Flying to Tanzania, home of the Serengeti, Mount Kilimanjaro and the Ngorongoro Crater, requires a bit of country-hopping for American travelers. No airlines provide direct service to the country from the United States. However, many international carriers both inside and outside of Africa, which have service in the United States or partnerships with U.S. airlines, fly to the country. Smaller airlines and charter services within Tanzania can let you further explore the country.
  1. From Outside of Africa

    • Several carriers offer service to Tanzania from Europe and the Middle East, mostly terminating at Dar Es Salaam's Julius Nyerere International Airport. From Europe, KLM flies daily from Amsterdam to both Dar Es Salaam and Kilimanjaro International Airport near the border with Kenya. Turkish Airlines also flies to both airports from Istanbul five times a week, though the Dar Es Salaam route requires a stopover in Mombasa, Kenya. Swiss International Airlines flies from Zurich to Dar Es Salaam five times a week with a stopover in Nairobi. In the Middle East, three carriers provide daily flights to Dar Es Salaam: Emirates from Dubai, Oman Air from Abu Dhabi and Qatar Airways from Doha. The Qatar Airways flight also includes a stopover in Kilimanjaro.

    Within Africa

    • International carriers within Africa that provide daily service to Dar Es Salaam include: South African Airways, from Johannesburg; Ethiopian Airlines, from Addis Ababa; Kenya Airways, from Nairobi; Air Uganda, from Kampala; and LAM Mozambique Airlines, from Maputo. All airlines fly directly to Dar Es Salaam except Ethiopian Airlines, which stops in Tanzania's Zanzibar archipelago on the way. Ethiopian Airlines also flies to Kilimanjaro. Rwanda Air also flies from Kigali to Dar Es Salaam, via Kilimanjaro, six times per week, and Egypt Airways flies from Cairo to Dar Es Salaam four times per week.

    Tanzanian Carriers

    • Tanzania is home to several regional carriers that offer service to parks and cities across the country. The two primary carriers, Air Tanzania and Precision Air, both connect to Mwanza and Mtwara. Air Tanzania also flies to Kigoma, and Precision Air has service to Bukoba and Kilimanjaro. Both these carriers have small fleets and, as of 2013, had significant financial troubles, so service might not be reliable. Other regional carriers include Coastal Travels, Fast Jet, Auric Air Services, Air Excel and ZanAir, which connects from Zanzibar. If you are traveling as part of a tour package, you likely will be using charter flights within Tanzania. These can be very small planes, so if you are a skittish flyer, you should ask your tour provider about the plane type beforehand and inquire about ground transportation alternatives if the size of the plane will make you uncomfortable.

    Entry Requirements

    • Tanzania requires U.S. citizens to have both a passport and a visa upon entry. You may purchase your visa upon arrival in Tanzania's airports. You will need $100 for the visa, but check the rate before your arrival, because it can change frequently. If possible, you should acquire your visa from a Tanzanian embassy before your flight, as the line for visas can be lengthy. If you are flying in from a yellow fever endemic country -- including Ethiopia, Kenya and Rwanda -- you also must show proof of yellow fever vaccination upon arrival.
