Airlines allow one handbag or small tote to carry all of the essentials that you don't want to keep in your standard-size carry-on. Handbags vary in size and can include shopping bags, briefcases or other small bags with handles that are light enough to be carried.
Instead of a handbag, you may choose to carry a purse on board. Purses are usually slightly smaller, and women carry them by a shoulder strap or handles.
The stated policy is one "personal item" in addition to your carry-on. Both handbags and purses are considered personal items, thus you might want to leave one or the other of them at home.
