As of August 2010, Horizon Air's unaccompanied minor service is mandatory for children aged 5 to 12 who are traveling without an adult over 18 years old.
For young adults aged 13 to 17, the service is optional. However, if the young adult is transferring to another airline that considers her an unaccompanied minor, she must also travel on Horizon Air as an unaccompanied minor.
Children must be at least 5 years old at the time of travel. In groups of traveling children, the youngest child's flight restrictions apply to all traveling minors.
Guardians who wish to escort the minor to the gate must pay an additional fee to obtain an escort pass from the Transportation Security Administration. Guardians should arrive at least 90 minutes early to obtain these passes from the airline ticket counter. They will also need to complete and submit guardian contact forms at check-in.
Escort passes are available for up to two adults. Guardians must remain in the boarding area until the child's flight has departed.
Guardians must present valid photo identification when picking up the child traveler.
Unaccompanied minors cannot travel on Horizon Air flights that connect to or from non-Alaska Airlines or Horizon Air flights. They may not travel on the last connecting flight of the day (unless there is no other option), or on flights that include connections with over two hours' waiting time. Children under the age of 7 may not travel on flights requiring transfers or connections.
Children aged 8 to 12 can transfer or connect to flights on Horizon Air, Pen Air or Era Aviation. If a friend or family member will meet your child in a connecting city, you should notify Horizon Air prior to travel.
Horizon Air does not allow unaccompanied minors to travel on flights departing between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
If weather is likely to affect routing operations or connecting flight points, Horizon Air will not allow unaccompanied minors to board affected flights.
Children traveling to international destinations have the same passport and visa requirements as adults. Guardians must complete all customs forms at check-in.
