Flying first class often evokes a feeling of class and prestige not associated with coach travel. First-class fliers are treated to more personal service, additional baggage allowance and free access to airport lounges that include showers, cocktails and sometimes, massages. Because airlines frequently provide upgrades to loyal customers, the higher cost of first class often pays off in the long run.
Paying for a first-class ticket provides more luxurious and larger seats. More leg room is also standard, making for more comfortable travel within the United States or abroad. For international flights, most carriers provide lie-flat beds, which promote more restful and comfortable sleep. Larger seats offer greater availability to use laptops while in flight. Additionally, first class passengers are treated to more menu choices on flights exceeding two hours, as well as complimentary snacks and drinks. Free headsets, newspaper and individual video screens with on-demand movies are also customary.
On most airlines, first-class passengers receive priority boarding including perks such as special check in spots, separate security lines and are the first to be called for boarding. First-class guests can enjoy free Internet access in first-class lounges, as well as complimentary drinks at a fully-staffed bar and no-charge snacks. For most first-class clubs, guests must be 18 years or older or accompanied by an adult.
For flights more than two hours long, first-class passengers often have their choice of meal options. These meals can range from simple sandwiches and snacks to gourmet fish or chicken dishes. Additionally, cocktails, soda and juice are no charge and guests have their choice of wines.
While most airlines charge per bag and allow one carry on, first class rules are generally a bit different. On most airlines, first-class passengers are permitted up to three pieces of checked luggage without a fee. Customers must still watch the size and weight of luggage, since oversize or overweight fees will probably still apply and vary on the airline.
To promote first-class travel and to offset the additional cost, many airlines have adopted a frequent flier program. The more first or business class tickets a traveler purchases, the more frequent flier miles they can acquire. For the most benefit, join a program that allows pooling of miles, a program which allows combining points received by different airlines.
