Fayetteville is a large city in south-central North Carolina, about an hour's drive from the Atlantic coast. It is the state's sixth-largest city. The area is thought to have been settled at least 12,000 years ago by Cape Fear Indians. It was later occupied by those sympathetic to the British cause during the American Revolution. After the Revolution, Fayetteville played a key role in the development of the American government. The U.S. Constitution was discussed and debated in Fayetteville prior to its formalization. Today the city is often associated with such major military bases as Fort Bragg and the Pope Air Force Base, which are within its reach. Residents and visitors to Fayetteville have a choice of several airports that service the area.
Fayetteville Regional Airport is the closest commercial airport to the city of Fayetteville. It is located only a few minutes from the downtown and services commercial airlines. The two largest airlines that fly into Fayetteville Regional Airport are Delta and US Airways. Delta flights usually run between Fayetteville and the nearby Delta hub in Atlanta. US Airways flights fly between Fayetteville and Charlotte, North Carolina. Despite its small size, the airport does provide several rental car counters and an extensive list of taxi services.
