AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, is a low-fare air carrier catering to both passenger and business classes. It flies one of the youngest fleets, provides XM Satellite Radio and as of summer 2009, wi-fi Internet.
AirTran runs its hub form the Hartfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Corporate headquarters are located in Orlando, Florida.
As of 2009, AirTran operates more than 700 daily flights to 56 U.S. destinations and serves nearly 20 million passengers each year.
In 1994, AirTran Holdings purchased Conquest Sun Airlines and renamed it AirTran Airways. ValueJet aquired AirTran Airways in 1997.
AirTran was the first airline to take delivery of a Boeing 717. The airline currently runs one of the most modern all Boeing fleets.
On Aug. 15, 2001, AirTran stock began trading publicly under the AAI symbol.
In both 2008 and 2009, AirTran was ranked the top low cost carrier in the Airline Quality Rating Study. It was ranked second overall among 17 airlines.
